By Brandon Burkey, Founder & CEO, Xtreme Mats ยท Under-sink cabinet mats since 2013

Quick answer

The Xtreme Mats Home Organization Guide uses a four-step method for every cabinet, drawer and shelf: empty and sort, clean and check for damage, line or protect the surface, then group and label. Drawers and shelves get the Xtreme Mats Trimmable Drawer Liner (5-pack), whose non-slip backing keeps the liner from shifting as drawers open and close. Sink bases get an Xtreme Mats Under Sink Cabinet Mat (16 sizes, 1-inch lip for kitchen depth, ยพ-inch lip for vanity depth, up to 3.7 gallons of capacity) with a water sensor. Pull-out trash cabinets get a trimmable trash can liner, and the floor in front of the fridge or dishwasher gets an Appliance Drip Mat that catches ice, water and condensation.

"The question isn't if you'll have a leak under your sink, it's when, and whether you'll be prepared. Prevention before detection."

โ€” Brandon Burkey

Why organized spaces fall apart

Most organized cabinets fail because of what happens underneath them, not because of the bins on top. You empty a cabinet, sort it and put everything back in neat bins, then a drip, a tipped bottle or a week of crumbs puts you back where you started.

We have made under-sink cabinet mats and home-protection products since 2013, and the fix is always the same: organize it, then protect it. Line dry drawers and shelves, put a raised-lip mat under every sink, and protect the floor in front of the fridge and dishwasher.

This guide walks room by room through the kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, entryway, pet areas and RV storage. For leak causes, warning signs and a monthly check, see our Complete Guide to Under-Sink Leak Protection.

The 4-step method

Pick one cabinet or one drawer, finish it, then move on. The same four steps work in every room.

1. Empty and sort (keep, donate, toss)

Take everything out and lay it on a towel so you can see what you own. Sort into keep, donate and toss. If you have not used something in a year and it is not seasonal or for emergencies, it probably does not need that drawer.

2. Clean and check for damage

With the space empty, wipe the interior and look for water rings, swelling, soft spots in particleboard, peeling edges and musty smells. Under sinks, also check the supply lines, shutoff valves and P-trap. If you find water damage, fix the source and dry the cabinet before you organize on top of it; the U.S. EPA advises drying water-damaged areas within 24โ€“48 hours to help prevent mold (EPA). Our guide to fixing cabinet water damage covers the repair.

3. Line or protect the surface

Before you put anything back, match the surface to the right protection:

  • Drawers and shelves: an Xtreme Mats Trimmable Drawer Liner. The non-slip backing keeps the liner from shifting as drawers open and close, and it catches crumbs and wipes clean.
  • Sink bases, vanities and utility sinks: an Xtreme Mats Under Sink Cabinet Mat. Its raised lip contains leaks and spills before they reach the cabinet floor.
  • Pull-out trash cabinets: an Xtreme Mats Pull-Out Trash Can Cabinet Liner under the can.
  • The floor in front of the fridge or dishwasher: an Xtreme Mats Appliance Drip Mat, which catches ice, water and condensation before it reaches the flooring.

Once everything is lined, upkeep means wiping a liner or mat instead of scrubbing raw wood, laminate or flooring.

4. Group, contain and label

Put like with like, and add bins, turntables or drawer inserts only after the surface is lined. Label bins if more than one person uses the space. Leave a little empty room; a packed drawer is a jammed drawer.

Kitchen organization

The kitchen sees the most traffic, moisture and small spills, so it is where organization either holds or fails.

Utensil and cutlery drawers: Trimmable Drawer Liner

Empty the drawer, wipe out crumbs and sticky spots, and separate daily tools from gadgets you never use. Then line the drawer before anything goes back.

The Xtreme Mats Trimmable Drawer Liner is sold as a 5-pack in beige or grey. Each liner has built-in cutting lines, so you can trim it with scissors or a utility knife without measuring every cut. The non-slip backing grips the drawer bottom, so the liner stays in place every time the drawer opens and closes. It wipes or rinses clean and protects the drawer from scratches and stains. The drawer liner is a flat liner for dry storage, not a spill tray.

Tip: measure the inside width and depth, trim slightly under those numbers so the liner lies flat at the corners, and keep the cutting lines facing up for future trims. One 5-pack usually covers several drawers and a shelf or two.

Deep drawers for pots, pans and lids

Line deep drawers with the same drawer liner so pans do not scratch the drawer bottom. Group pots by size, stand lids upright in a rack, and keep the heaviest cookware toward the back so the drawer opens smoothly.

Upper cabinets, shelves and the pantry

Upper cabinets and pantry shelves collect oil, flour dust and sticky jars. Empty one shelf at a time, wipe it, and line it with pieces from the drawer liner 5-pack. Group pantry items by category (breakfast, baking, snacks, cans), use clear bins for bags that spill, and keep labels at eye level.

Under the kitchen sink: Under Sink Cabinet Mat and water sensor

The sink base is the one kitchen cabinet that needs to hold liquid. Empty it, check for soft spots, stains and damp fittings, then protect the floor before you put organizers back.

Xtreme Mats Under Sink Cabinet Mats come in 16 sizes: kitchen depth (22ยผ" deep with a 1-inch lip) and vanity depth (19ยผ" deep with a ยพ-inch lip), each in eight widths from 19ยผ" to 40ยผ", in beige or grey. Capacity varies by size; the largest holds up to 3.7 gallons. The mats are made of flexible low-density polyethylene with low to zero odor, have angled sides and a rear wall for a snug fit, and use a textured surface that keeps stored items up off the bottom if something leaks. Every mat has a built-in spot for a water sensor. Under Sink Cabinet Mats carry a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects (Warranty Information).

If a supply line or drain comes up through the cabinet floor, cut the mat to fit around it; our Step Drill Bit drills clean holes from 3/16" to 7/8". For an odd-size cabinet, use the Trimmable Cabinet Mat (34" ร— 22"): one patented design fits both kitchen and vanity depths, its raised edges contain under-sink messes, and you trim it to fit.

Add an Xtreme Mats Water Sensor in the mat's sensor spot. It sounds a 100 dB alarm the moment it touches water and needs no wiring. The battery is sealed, so you replace the whole sensor every two years; the date is printed on the bottom. Test it twice a year by laying a damp paper towel across the two prongs on the bottom.

Then organize on top of the mat: upright bins or a small turntable, bottles standing up, and nothing piled against the P-trap where it hides a drip.

The pull-out trash can cabinet: Trash Can Cabinet Liner

Pull-out trash cabinets hide drips and odors until the cabinet floor is stained. Empty the pull-out, wipe the cabinet floor and slide rails, then line the floor under the can.

The Xtreme Mats Pull-Out Trash Can Cabinet Liner is a single trimmable liner in beige or grey, with cutting lines so you can trim it to the pull-out opening. Its non-slip backing keeps it from shifting as the pull-out opens and closes, and it wipes or rinses clean. Watch the trash liner install video for a walkthrough.

In front of the fridge and dishwasher: Appliance Drip Mat

Ice, water-dispenser drips and condensation under the front of a refrigerator or freezer slowly stain and damage the floor. The Xtreme Mats Appliance Drip Mat is a rubber mat that sits under the front of the appliance and holds that moisture so it does not seep into the flooring. It also works under dishwashers and other appliances that leak or sweat.

It comes in two sizes, 37ยฝ" L ร— 8ยฝ" D and 27" L ร— 6ยฝ" D, in Cappuccino or Slate. To clean it, wipe it down or rinse it and put it back.

Bathroom organization

Bathrooms are small, wet and full of bottles that tip, so the vanity needs a waterproof layer before anything else.

Under the bathroom vanity: vanity-depth Under Sink Cabinet Mat

Empty the vanity and check the supply lines, shutoff valves and P-trap. Swollen particleboard under a bathroom sink is common; if you see it, fix the source first.

Choose a vanity-depth Under Sink Cabinet Mat (19ยผ" deep, ยพ-inch lip), or trim a Trimmable Cabinet Mat for an odd-size vanity. Add a water sensor and write down its replace-by date. Then organize: everyday products in a front bin, backups in back, and hair tools in a caddy you can lift out to clean.

Bathroom drawers and linen closet shelves

Line bathroom drawers with pieces from the drawer liner 5-pack so the liner stays put and makeup, first-aid items and toiletries have a surface that wipes clean. On linen shelves, the same liner protects the shelf from lotion rings under stacks of towels. Group by person or category, and keep one "almost empty" bin so half-used products do not spread across every drawer.

Laundry room, entryway and pet areas

Treat any space with water, detergent or wet shoes like a sink base, not a dry closet.

Under the utility sink and on supply shelves

Empty the utility sink cabinet, check the fittings, and install an Under Sink Cabinet Mat sized to the cabinet. Keep detergent, stain removers and bleach in bins on the mat so a leaking jug stays inside the lip. Line open supply shelves with the drawer liner so powder spills wipe up instead of caking onto the shelf.

Entryway and mudroom: Utility Mat & Boot Tray

The Xtreme Mats Anywhere, Anytime Multi-Purpose Utility Mat & Boot Tray (19" ร— 19", grey or beige) gives wet shoes, umbrellas and leashes one place to land. Put it where shoes actually come off, not where you wish they would, and empty the grit weekly. It also works as a parts tray for repairs, a craft surface or a tray for bottom-watering plants.

Pet feeding station: Pet Mat / Tray

The Xtreme Mats Pet Mat / Tray comes in the same 16 width and depth options as our cabinet mats, in beige or grey. Its raised edges keep food and water off the floor, and it is waterproof and wipes clean. Pick a size with a little room around the bowls, and sweep stray kibble into the tray instead of across the floor.

RV and small-space organization

In an RV everything moves, so storage needs a surface that stays clean and keeps gear from sliding.

Xtreme Mats RV Storage Compartment Mats come in the same 16 sizes as our cabinet mats (19ยผ" or 22ยผ" deep, widths from 19ยผ" to 40ยผ") in beige or grey. They protect compartment floors from dirt and moisture and wipe clean. Line one bay at a time, then reload it with bins that lock or nest.

Xtreme Mats Interior RV Step Mats come in 24โ…" L ร— 12โ…" D and 24โ…" L ร— 9โ…›" D, sold individually or as a 2-piece set, in beige or grey. They trap dirt and moisture from shoes, the non-slip backing keeps each mat firmly in place on the step, and the color trim makes the step edge easier to see in low light. Most listed models need no trimming; the product page lists the models they fit and the exceptions.

How to pick the right mat size

You want the largest mat that fits without being larger than the cabinet's interior dimensions. Measure the inside width and depth, and note any pipes, outlets or disposals that the mat must clear.

  • Kitchen sink bases (cabinets about 24" deep) take kitchen-depth mats, 22ยผ" deep.
  • Bathroom vanities (cabinets about 21" deep) take vanity-depth mats, 19ยผ" deep.
  • Corner sink bases can use either depth in either orientation; a kitchen-depth mat gives more front-to-back coverage, a vanity-depth mat more side-to-side. See corner cabinet options.

The Measuring Guide & Size Chart walks through it. Not sure? Call 407-392-0950 or email customerservice@xtrememats.com before you order.

Keeping it organized

Organization is a routine, not a one-time project. Keep the bar low enough that you will actually do it.

  • Monthly: pull the front items out of high-use drawers and sink cabinets, wipe the liner or mat, and wipe or rinse the Appliance Drip Mat.
  • Seasonally: empty the one zone that always drifts (the junk drawer, the vanity, the laundry shelf), re-sort, and re-trim or reseat any liner that has moved.
  • Twice a year: test each water sensor with a damp paper towel across the prongs.
  • Every two years: replace each water sensor (the battery is sealed; the date is on the bottom).
  • After any plumbing or filter work: check the sink mat and sensor that day and the next. New fittings are the most likely to weep.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start organizing my home?

Start with the one space that frustrates you most, usually the utensil drawer, the kitchen sink cabinet or the entryway shoe pile. Finish all four steps there before opening another cabinet.

Should I put liners in kitchen drawers and cabinets?

Yes. A liner protects the drawer bottom from scratches and stains and catches crumbs, so you wipe the liner instead of scrubbing the drawer. The Xtreme Mats Trimmable Drawer Liner (5-pack) has a non-slip backing, so it stays in place as the drawer opens and closes.

What is the difference between a drawer liner and an under-sink mat?

A drawer liner is flat and made for dry drawers and shelves. An Xtreme Mats Under Sink Cabinet Mat has a raised lip (1 inch on kitchen depth, ยพ inch on vanity depth) that contains leaks and spills, holding up to 3.7 gallons in the largest size. Use a liner where things need to stay put and a mat where liquid needs to stay contained.

How do I organize under my kitchen sink?

Empty the cabinet, check for leaks and soft spots, install an Under Sink Cabinet Mat sized to the cabinet's interior, add a water sensor in the mat's sensor spot, then put items back in upright bins on top of the mat.

Can Xtreme Mats liners be cut to fit?

Yes. The Trimmable Drawer Liner, the Pull-Out Trash Can Cabinet Liner and the Trimmable Cabinet Mat can all be trimmed with scissors or a utility knife; the drawer and trash liners have built-in cutting lines. The fixed-size Under Sink Cabinet Mats are not meant to be trimmed to size, but you can cut holes for pipes that come up through the cabinet floor. Xtreme Mats does not make custom sizes.

How do I protect the floor in front of the fridge and dishwasher?

Place an Xtreme Mats Appliance Drip Mat under the front of the refrigerator, freezer or dishwasher. The rubber mat holds ice melt, water and condensation so it does not seep into the flooring. It comes in 37ยฝ" ร— 8ยฝ" and 27" ร— 6ยฝ".

How long does the water sensor last?

The Xtreme Mats Water Sensor has a sealed battery, so you replace the whole sensor every two years. The date is printed on the bottom. Test it twice a year with a damp paper towel across the prongs.

The bottom line

An organized home stays organized when the surface under your things is as intentional as the bins on top. Empty, clean, line, then group. Use the non-slip Trimmable Drawer Liner in dry drawers and shelves, a raised-lip Under Sink Cabinet Mat with a water sensor under every sink, a trash can liner in the pull-out, and an Appliance Drip Mat in front of the fridge and dishwasher.

The Complete Guide to Under-Sink Leak Protection: Causes, Warning Signs, and How to Protect Your Cabinets

The best way to protect an under-sink cabinet from leaks is three layers: prevention, containment and detection. Prevention means a 5-minute monthly check of supply lines, shutoff valves, the P-trap, the disposal and any filter fittings. Containment means an Xtreme Mats Under Sink Cabinet Mat, which comes in 16 sizes: kitchen mats are 22ยผ" deep with a 1-inch lip and hold 1.14 to 3.74 gallons, and vanity mats are 19ยผ" deep with a ยพ-inch lip and hold 1.14 to 2.42 gallons. Detection means an Xtreme Mats Water Sensor in the matโ€™s built-in sensor spot; it sounds a 100 dB alarm when liquid touches its prongs and should be replaced every two years because the battery is sealed.
